About the Captain Cook Area

The community of Captain Cook, South Kona, is found (as previously mentioned), between the communities of Kealakekua and Honaunau-Napoopoo. The main road that runs through the Captain Cook, Hawaiʻi Belt Road (Māmalahoa Highway), connects all three communities together. The other major road in the area is Māmalahoa Bypass Road, which turns into Napoopoo Road.

Although the boundaries of Captain Cook stretch far into the east, most of this is untouched forest, fields, and farmland. To the west is Keawekāheka Bay, and the cliffs at Kealakekua Bay. There is mostly undeveloped land separating the Captain Cook residential areas from the coast.

Real Estate in Captain Cook

If you’re on the hunt for a private island property, then consider real estate in Captain Cook. Homes for sale here are exclusive, and highly sought-after for their size.

Most of the homes in this area are located east of Hawai’i Belt Road, just off of the winding roads increase steadily in elevation. Here you’ll find quiet, tranquil properties that face the coast—and have some amazing views of the water! Architectural design in this area typically mixes beach styles with some more traditional Hawaiian elements. These homes are often multi-storey with quite a bit of grassy yard space.

West of Hawai’i Belt Road is where you’ll find some contemporary, villa style homes, but also more of the beautiful, traditional beach styles. With both newer and older builds, generally you’ll find modern interior upgrades and spacious floor plans. The homes for sale here are generally priced higher because of their close proximity to the waterfront. However, there are no properties in Captain Cook located right on the ocean.

One of the biggest draws of Captain Cook is, once again, its untouched land. As a result, there are many, many opportunities for you to build your dream home here. From large, forested lots situated above the community, to exclusive lots located close to the cliffs, there is much choice in this area for potential buyers.

As well, land for sale in Captain Cook is available in very substantial acreages. The epitome of your own perfect paradise, the sky’s the limit when it comes to your dream home.

Captain Cook Highlights and Amenities

There is a lot to see and do in Captain Cook, Hawai’i. As the area was named after a historic post office, there are several landmarks and museums that one can visit. The community itself, however, is considering changing the name because of the history behind it.

Along the main roads, you’ll find the Kona Historical Society, King’s Mansion (a historic home that houses Youth With A Mission), the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden, and a number of local shops and restaurants. The area also has a fire station, post office, elementary school (Konawaena Elementary School), and much more!

The Captain Cook Monument Trail begins at Napoopoo Road and goes all the way down to the Captain James Cook Monument—the area’s most recognizable landmark, located right on the waterfront. Surrounding this you’ll find Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park, with stunning cliffs that overlook the ocean. Kayakers, snorkelers, and boaters in particular love this area—and you may even see some dolphins!

Coffee-lovers rejoice! Because of Captain Cook’s location, there are many coffee farms in the community—and this includes the Kona Coffee Living History Farm, a museum located on Hawai’i Belt Road, that explores the history of coffee-growing in the area. Captain Cook also has a number of coffee shops found all throughout the region!

There are even more attractions in the areas around Captain Cook: Manini Beach, Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park, and Paleaku Gardens Peace Sanctuary are found to the south, while Kona Country Club (located in Kailua-Kona) is found to the north.
