About the Mauna Kea Resort Area

The beautiful coastal community at Mauna Kea Resort is located in the northern part of South Kohala. The area’s beach, called Mauna Kea (Kaunaʻoa) Beach, is especially beloved for its beautiful sand and turquoise waters.

There are three points of entry to Mauna Kea Resort, each branching off from the Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway. The residences around Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, located by the oceanfront in the west, can be accessed via Mauna Kea Beach Drive. The residences east of the highway can be accessed by Kauna’oa Drive. There is no way to enter the community from Hapuna Beach Road, as the access point is blocked off.

Real Estate in Mauna Kea Resort

A property in Mauna Kea Resort means a luxurious, private lifestyle. This area is popular both with tourists and with homebuyers—and for good reason! Mauna Kea Resort’s amenities and properties are a big draw for the community.

The homes for sale in Mauna Kea Resort are difficult to access, as the community is composed of several neighborhoods, all of which are gated. The two access points, at Mauna Kea Beach Drive and Kauna’oa Drive respectively, are expertly landscaped with properties hidden away from view of the street.

Although perhaps most well-known for its beautiful beachfront luxury hotel, Mauna Kea Resort has a lot to offer for prospective homebuyers—including luxury villas, condos, and vacant land. In regards to architectural design, the resort hotel is decidedly more contemporary than the properties surrounding it, all of which take on the typical, Hawaiian-inspired modern design. One of the most characteristic features of these homes are the lānais that really open up a space, and provide residents with broad views of the ocean and/or the bright green grass of the community’s golf course.

Generous in square footage, with contemporary upgrades, each home for sale in Mauna Kea Resort is the height of luxury living. Of course, if you’re interested in something very specific, purchasing vacant land to build your dream home on might just be exactly what you’re looking for!

Mauna Kea Resort Highlights and Amenities

As previously mentioned, the community at Mauna Kea Resort provides residents with excellent amenities which are only steps out your front door—including the beach.

One of the biggest area highlights is Mauna Kea Beach. This, like all other beaches, is public, however it is less crowded than other, similar options, as parking is regulated. The beach is known for being a great place to swim, snorkel, or chill on the sand and enjoy the sun. Adventurous visitors can hike the Ala Kahakai Trail, which stretches from Mauna Kea Beach down to Hapuna Beach—another area favorite. Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area, which surrounds the beach, has parking and washroom facilities.

On the grounds, you’ll also find the expansive Mauna Kea Golf Course—with 18 holes, this course stretches all around the resort, and has world-class ocean views. To the south, you’ll find Hapuna Golf Course.

Other highlights include The Mauna Kea Lū‘a (a performance and dinner venue), Seaside Tennis Club (located nearby) Kaunaoa Beach, and Hāpuna Heliport (which provides helicopter tours). There are also a number of restaurants in the area, including Meridia, but shopping opportunities are limited.

To the north, you’ll find Kamuela, which features attractions such as Mau'umae Beach and Spencer Beach Park. To the south is Mauna Lani, a resort community with shopping, beaches, and other attractions.
