About the Kamuela Area
Kamuela touches the community of Mauna Kea: a luxurious beachfront resort neighborhood in South Kohala. This region is not to be confused with Waimea, which is also sometimes called Kameula. The census-designated place of Waimea is located further inland at the base of the Kohala Watershed Forest Reserve and Kohala.
Instead, the area of Kamuela encompasses regions within Mauna Kea and the roughly 12 miles north of it, existing largely along the coast. Traveling south will take one to the Mauna Kea and Mauna Lani resort communities, and then continuing on will take you to Waikoloa. The area of Waikoloa Village is located east of the Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway. Traveling north from Kamuela will take you to the unincorporated community of Kawaihae.
Real Estate in Kamuela
The homes for sale in Kamuela are simply stunning. Largely single-family, modern villas, these luxury homes are highly-desirable. Designed in the characteristic style of the island, which mixes traditional Hawaiian-style features (such as low roofs and plenty of outdoor space) with contemporary innovation, the estates and villas in Kamuela seek to retain the aesthetic of island architecture—and rarely stray from this.
Property either overlooks the stunning mountains and Hawaiian landscape or allows for spectacular ocean views. For the most in-demand villas, the great location is one of the most appealing features.
The area also offers vacant land for sale, for those searching for the perfect home to build themselves. Lots, while priced highly, are generous in size, and offer prospective buyers plenty of choice. Some lots for sale are even located just steps away from the ocean.
There are also a number of condos for sale in the area of Kamuela. Typically, these builds tend to be designed in a more contemporary style, with less of the traditional Hawaiian influences in the architecture. Condos in Kamuela are found either in quiet, residential areas, or overlook the beach and waterfront.
Kamuela Highlights and Amenities
The Kamuela lifestyle is one of peace and luxury. Residents of this area will find that the location of this region makes it easy to travel around the island. Roads lead into Highway 19 (the Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway) or Hawai'i Route 270 (the 'Akoni Pule Highway), which can take you all around to the other side of the island. Puako Beach Drive also takes you down south along the coast, but does end at Holoholokai Beach Park.
You’ll find that there are many beaches and parks nearby. Beach 67 and Waialea Beach are small and rather secluded beaches. Beach 69, located a little further south, is a great destination for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area is also a popular beach, and particularly good for families as there is lots of space. Other areas of interest include Kalahuipua'a Historic Park, where one can see preserved lava, and PuakĹŤ Petroglyph Park, which showcases ancient etchings.
There are, of course, also a number of shops and restaurants around the area. Most are found right along the waterfront… or very close! While there’s something for every taste, many restaurants focus on Hawaiian cuisine and seafood.
